Love That Man / Movin' In The Right Direction

In an amazing turn of events, one of the first artists to appear on the original Soul City label is back with a pair of previously unreleased tracks almost sixty years on! 

In January 1969, Soul City’s tenth release (SC 110) was by North Carolina-born Thelma Jones: “The House That Jack Built”. The up-tempo groove had all the makings of a hit for Thelma – until Cissy Houston (one of her background singers) suggested that the song would be ideal for Aretha Franklin!

Fast forward a few decades to when Los Angeles-based producer James Holvey was in the midst of conversations with Charly Records about other projects when he sent over a track with a soulful female vocalist…who just ‘happened’ to be, the one and only Thelma Jones!

It was a remarkable find for Soul City Records co-founder David Nathan, a dear friend of Thelma’s, and the track – “Love That Man” – with its irresistible Chicago-soul style beat and flavour is making its first-ever appearance on Soul City.

The ‘B’ side, the foot-tappin’ “Movin’ In The Right Direction,” cut with The L.A. Soul Brothers, has a very timely lyrical message of hope and positivity with vocal shades of Mavis Staples.
