Born in Indianola, Mississippi, on 25th April 1923, little Albert Nelson was raised in Forrest City, Arkansas, and taught himself how to play guitar when he was just a child, building his first instrument out of a cigar box.

He adopted the stage name Albert King in 1953 after his hero B B King. He even named his trademark Flying V electric guitar “Lucy” after B B’s guitar “Lucille”. King’s big break came when he joined Stax Records in the mid-Sixties becoming an international star.

After the demise of Stax, he joined, first Utopia and then Tomato Records in 1976. Albert stayed at Tomato for seven years releasing King Albert in 1977 produced by the Detroit legend Don Davis and recorded at United Sound Systems. This splendid album marked a return-to-form with a fine Motor City blues band that handles everything from B B King’s big hit “You Upset Me Baby” to Little Sonny Willis’s exciting “Love Shock” and the soulful “Good Time Charlie”.

“Albert King wasn’t my brother in blood, but he sure was my brother in Blues.” B B King
