When Bubble Puppy hit in 1967, they were the wild new breed of Texas rock: long hair, loud amps, and sky-high hooks. Signed to International Artists Records — home to the 13th Floor Elevators — the band struck gold with their debut single, the blistering “Hot Smoke & Sassafras.” A Hendrix-charged rocket, it blasted to #14 on the U.S. charts in early ’69 and lit the fuse for what came next.

That “next” was A Gathering of Promises — a record that fused garage grit, trippy textures, and powerhouse harmonies into something all its own. Brighter and more melodic than Easter Everywhere, yet tougher and leaner than anything coming out of the West Coast, it stands as a pure rush of late-’60s Texas energy — vivid, electric, and full of life.
