Following hot on the heels of their Jamaican 1967 debut album 007 Shanty Town, Desmond Dekker and the Aces were ready for Action! the following year. Like its predecessor, Action! bundled up another slew of the quintet’s recent hits featuring ‘Don’t Believe Me’, a stunning example of the rock steady genre with tight vocal harmonies and that Beverley’s rhythm section composed of Kingston’s finest session musicians, arranged by Leslie Kong. Also featured is the anthemic ‘Unity’, an historically important message calling for harmony in the post-independence era of Jamaica as a fully-fledged nation.
Action! is an optimistic album full of beautifully executed harmonies and lyrics condensing messages down to their bare essence.
